MENtal Health: The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Men

Uncategorized

Last week in my life span development class, we learned that in the United States although more women attempt suicide, more men die because of suicide.

This statistic was not surprising to me, as I know that there is a lack of mental health awareness for men in the United States.

boys2.jpg

As the mother of a boy, I know it is easy to just want your son to be athletic and “tough” all the time. You forget to encourage them to talk about their feelings and that it is okay There are pressures from other family members and competition between male siblings and cousins to be the best at athletics. While focusing on athletics, boys tend to forget about their mental wellness. However, it is extremely important to stress mental wellness to young boys and men.

standing

By encouraging mental health awareness for men and young boys you are setting them up for a less stressful future. Individuals who understand the importance of mental wellness tend to be less stressed throughout life.

You are also decreasing the amount of physical aggression and anger in men by teaching them how to talk about mental illness issues and how to live a healthy lifestyle when it comes to mental wellness. According to the National Institution of Mental Health, “some men with depression or anxiety disorders hide emotions” causing them to “appear angry or aggressive when they express their emotions”.

By teaching your sons, nephews, and husbands to effectively express and talk about their mental wellness, one is helping them live a better lifestyle.

Remember it is completely okay for boys to express their feelings! Everyone deserves to be able to talk about their mental wellbeing, including males!

A Spiritual Journey through Journaling

Uncategorized

By: Kristen Pettaway, MA Student at Liberty University; Clinical Case Manager Intern Destination Greatness, PLLC

Journal

(Yahoo, 2017)

When times get complicated for me I have often found relief in writing down my thoughts and feelings.  Often times it brings out many emotions that I have been unable to share with anyone else.  Journaling is personal yet profound.  Journaling it is a form of expressing oneself on paper that can be easier than talking face to face with someone.  The paper does not care who you are or where you come from. The paper is there simply to be a tool used to obtain mindfulness.  To release built up feelings and emotions.

Journaling

(Start at 60 writers, 2017)

Journaling is powerful.  Journaling can take just a few minutes or as much time as it takes to complete a thought.  There are no rules. No judgement. No obligation to journaling. The only thing needed is writing material, a quiet place, and a desire to express yourself.

Journaling is a way to:

  • Express your Fears
  • Express your Emotions
  • Express your Dreams and Desires
  • Acknowledge your failures
  • Document your prayers
  • Document your Goals
  • Document your Decisions
  • Record your thoughts

Some people use alcohol, drugs, sex, even religion as a way to escape from feeling.  Some use all of these in combination in order not to feel.  Journaling is a way to find relief without causing self-harm or causing harm to others.  Through Journaling you can commune with God by pouring out and calling out to Him.  Through journaling burdens and yolks are lifted.

A Spiritual journey through journaling happens when you look back over your life and realize how far you have come.  Your Spiritual journey can be both rewarding and daunting at the same time. By keeping a journal you can revisit it at any time to survey where you are currently, your accomplishments and goals yet to accomplish.

Revisit your journal often to track:

  • How you concurred your fears
  • How you managed your emotions
  • How you accomplished your Dreams and Desires
  • How you regrouped and moved past your failures
  • When God Answered your Prayers
  • When you accomplished that Goal
  • If the decisions you made were helpful
  • how your thinking and behavior have changed

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

Journaling helps identify areas in which to focus your attention.  Journaling helps put your thoughts, feelings, behavior, and spirituality in alignment with the will of God.  Your Spiritual journey through journaling is a powerful tool of self-awareness and future endeavors.

Until next time, enjoy the journey to your Destiny!

3 Reasons To See a Therapist

Therapy Talk Thursdays

Should I, or should I not, go see a therapist?  We often ask ourselves that very question, especially around the holidays!  Here are the top three reasons to see a professional!

Large Changes in Your Life

If you are experiencing a big change in your life like a move, new job or a change in a relationship it could be an indicator that you can use some help transitioning.  A therapist can guide you through proven strategies and help you develop skills to deal with large changes.

Large changes in your life can often be accompanied by a lot of work.  Such as packing up for a move or learning new skills at a new job.  The busy work can distract from the build-up of stress.  Speaking with a therapist can help avoid any additional stress or unhealthy repercussions down the road.

Having Dangerous Thoughts.

Wanting to hurt yourself or others is a warning sign you need help.  There is a difference between thoughts and action, but thinking about acting is a precursor to acting.  Being a danger to yourself or others is clear red flag and getting help is easy.  A quick Google search or locations in your area or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or Crisis Text Line can help.

Self-Medication

If you need an external resource to deal with issues around you it’s a clear sign to seek a therapist.  The skill set they can equip you with will help you avoid self-medicating and work through the stress in a healthy way.

In some situations, medication can be prescribed which when monitored by a professional is a lot less dangerous then medicating yourself through alcohol drugs or binge eating.  Other forms of self-medication include overworking, video games and gambling, Any external practice that is used to avoid the real world.  The domino effect self-medicating can have is alarming and seeking help can save your life and the relationships around you with your loved ones.

The Mental Cost of Entrepreneurship

Uncategorized

Mental Cost of Entrepreneurship

For every success; there are multiple instances of failure, each one leaving indelible scars on those involved. For some, these failures may serve as the inspiration to try and try again while, for others, it may result in wounds that become insurmountable. Furthermore, even the entrepreneurs who do make it, in most cases, do so at the expense of many things in their lives, each adding stresses to them as individuals that are difficult to measure.

But what is the true cost to the entrepreneur?

Answer to this vary from individuals based on a variety of factors such as financial stress, extremely irregular work schedules, difficulty with relationships, personal resilience, anxiety and depression, self-worth issues, stress induced by attempt to start up a business while simultaneously holding down a full time job (the infamous side hustle) and even addiction.

Simon Slade describes other potential costs that entrepreneurs must pay like the need to sacrifice security, the required investment of a massive amount of headspace, the potential loss of control, externally induced stress by means as changes in the macro economy that are well beyond an individual’s control?

Mental illness and entrepreneurship: Detriment or the “secret sauce”?

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California and Stanford, found that 72% of entrepreneurs in the sample self-reported mental health concerns significantly higher than the comparison group (demographically matched non-entrepreneurs). Furthermore, a full 49% of the entrepreneurs sampled reported having one or more lifetime mental health conditions.

Unfortunately, the cultural stigma that exists with regard to mental health issues prevents many from seeking the help they need. Also, societal perception of the entrepreneur as hero myth may be preventing these efforts of seeking help from picking up the steam they need.

4 Tips: Mental Wellness & The Entrepreneur

Therapy Talk Thursdays

Mental Health and the Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs are bold and audacious people pursing their passions.  The day to day activities of the entrepreneur are often solo.  Most start-ups are one-person machines.  The contrast between leadership and being alone in the journey can often leave entrepreneurs overly stressed.

StressedEntrepreneur

A start-up is exciting and fills the entrepreneur with purpose and passion.  However, it can quickly lead to depression, leaving many entrepreneurs confused.  Shouldn’t turning your passion into a business fill you with energy and happiness?

The feelings of isolation can be like a slow and steady pain that grows overtime and saps entrepreneurs from the inside out especially when their mental health needs are neglected.

Releasing stress after work with co-workers, a spouse or anyone that can relate is a great way to unwind.  The challenge with many entrepreneurs is that the day-to-day activities aren’t normal.  Most people can’t relate or have no idea what you’re talking about when you try to vent.  It’s difficult to explain and can be even more taxing to have to lay the groundwork to talk about an issue you’re having.

My challenge for all my fellow entrepreneurs is to take control of your mental health. Your success depends on it.

4 Mental Wellness Tips for the Entrepreneur

  1. Engage in Self-Care.
  2. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People.
  3. Complete a personal and business inventory.
  4. Seek professional help.

Community Advocacy

Uncategorized

Saturday, October 7th marked the day of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) 5K walk, which raises money to help further the efforts of awareness about mental illness.  On this day hundreds of walkers gathered at Grant Park in Atlanta GA IMG_0035to advocate on the behalf of mental illness in the community.  At the start of the walk over $108,000.00 dollars had been raised through sponsorships for NAMI walks.

Shanti Das gave her revealing testimony about her personal battle with severe depression, a disease that cost her father and cousin their lives. I spoke to Ashanti briefly and thanked her for sharing her story and congratulated her on her accomplishments. After introducing myself and Destination Greatness’ sponsorship to Silence the Shame I became a part of their walking family of approximately 15 others.

IMG_0016

I had a brief conversation with a lady who asked me if Shanti said that “prayer is not enough” to get her through her feeling of depression, to which I had said “Amen” to the statement. The lady was obviously offended. To that, I quoted scripture James 2:20 “faith without works is dead”. She replied, “bring all things to God in prayer”.  I then replied to her that God answers prayer by placing therapists to fill the gap fulfilling HIS will here on earth. She agreed and said, “you are right”. She moved from being critical and judgmental to seeing God’s handy work through His vessels of mental health providers. We parted gracefully and the walk began. God can do all things.

Brenda Wood also revealed her struggles with depression before announcing the official start of the walk. The mood was jovial, filled with strength and determination to make a difference.

Along the pathway through Grant Park individuals talked, laughed, cried, made friends and acquaintances but most of all walked for a collective cause.  No one was deterred from walking even as the glumly sky loomed overhead made way to mist and drizzle.  The event was too important to sway us.
