MENtal Health: The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Men

Uncategorized

Last week in my life span development class, we learned that in the United States although more women attempt suicide, more men die because of suicide.

This statistic was not surprising to me, as I know that there is a lack of mental health awareness for men in the United States.

boys2.jpg

As the mother of a boy, I know it is easy to just want your son to be athletic and “tough” all the time. You forget to encourage them to talk about their feelings and that it is okay There are pressures from other family members and competition between male siblings and cousins to be the best at athletics. While focusing on athletics, boys tend to forget about their mental wellness. However, it is extremely important to stress mental wellness to young boys and men.

standing

By encouraging mental health awareness for men and young boys you are setting them up for a less stressful future. Individuals who understand the importance of mental wellness tend to be less stressed throughout life.

You are also decreasing the amount of physical aggression and anger in men by teaching them how to talk about mental illness issues and how to live a healthy lifestyle when it comes to mental wellness. According to the National Institution of Mental Health, “some men with depression or anxiety disorders hide emotions” causing them to “appear angry or aggressive when they express their emotions”.

By teaching your sons, nephews, and husbands to effectively express and talk about their mental wellness, one is helping them live a better lifestyle.

Remember it is completely okay for boys to express their feelings! Everyone deserves to be able to talk about their mental wellbeing, including males!

10 Things You Should Know About Mental Health

Uncategorized

Have you ever thought about how your friends view mental health?

clarke-sanders-249798

Luckily, many of my friends like myself, are psychology majors or have some type of back ground related to psychology. However, I do have a few that are less familiar with the topic, this post is for them.

I am not poking fun or calling you out, because you are ignorant to the topic, but I do want to spread my knowledge on the subject, being that so many people suffer from mental illness related issues.

cropped-mental-health-1.jpg

Listed below are 10 things I want my friends who are not educated on mental illness to know:

  1. Different people experience different things. There is no one size fits all mold when it comes to mental illness.
  2. Talking about mental illness/ mental health is not weird.
  3. Mental illnesses are not just figments of someone’s imagination.
  4. Medications are not the only way to help someone cope with mental illness.
  5. Some people need to be medicated, and that too is okay.
  6. No, you can’t “catch” mental illness.
  7. Mental health is just as important as physical health.
  8. Mental health and mental illness is not restricted to one race or gender.
  9. You cannot heal overnight, things take time.
  10. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, do your research.

Hopefully, this post will help you see the world in a different light. Maybe it will inspire you to help someone else, or maybe you will just read it and forget about it.

Keep On, Keeping On.

Finals Week and Mental Health: How to survive.

Uncategorized

Being a student is stressful, many times students are juggling classes, extra-curricular activities, and jobs. The week after finals is always a time to stop and recollect for myself, as I know it is for others too. Sometimes juggling so many things, we forget to maintain our feelings and mental health during the semester, and especially during the last two weeks of a semester.

finals

I always tell myself how to stay stress free throughout the semester, but sometimes that is easier said than done. There are many ways one can maintain mental health. However, students differ from other people because we are usually on a tight budget, tight time frame, and most of the time you cannot just drop your school obligations and go for a spa weekend (regardless how much you want to procrastinate).

For students, simple things like making to do lists and taking naps are essential. Creating to do lists, will keep you on a schedule and keep your stress and anxiety levels down. Taking naps will ensure you are getting enough sleep, even when you pull three “all-nighters” a week.

cat nap.jpeg

Students should call home to their family and friends. Even though you will be reunited with them soon, calling home will lower anxiety and stress levels for most students.

phone.jpg

Even though, as a student you cannot go on a weekend spa retreat, doing things like taking long showers and simple sugar scrubs will take your mind off school, grades, and everything else.

Though the fall semester has officially ended in many schools, remembering these tips for spring finals week will ensure that you are mentally prepared to do well on all your finals.

Mental Health and High School Students

Uncategorized

There is no doubt that people who suffer from Mental Health issues, need extra support. Regardless if it comes from a parent, friend, sponsor, or teacher, just having one person to believe in you can drastically increase self-confidence. Increasing self-confidence will increase self-wellness over time.

compassion

In particular, students need someone who is willing to call and check in on them once or twice a week at most. This is true for students of just about any age, but high school students in particular. High school can be a rough time and even harder for students who are suffering from mental illnesses that may or may not be diagnosed.phone.jpeg

By checking in on the student you are showing them they have someone who cares about them and that they are important to someone.

support

Parents, make sure you talk to your kids about their mental wellness. Try to understand what they are going through, but also understand they may want to talk to someone other than you about issues related to mental health. Try to encourage them to make the best decisions for their lives. However, if they do not make the best decision, remember they are still your child and support them no matter what comes next.

Grief: An Essential Part of Mental Health

Uncategorized

Death is inevitable, it is the one thing that everyone is guaranteed. Coping with death is also something that everyone will have to go through at some point in their lives. Though many would like to think there is a “one size fits all” way to grief, there simply is not. There is not a set timeline, nor is there a correct way to grieve. Everyone is different.

sad boy.jpeg

Some put their feelings away and make everything a joke, some turn inward and refuse to talk about it. Others, turn to journaling or some form of spiritual healing. No matter how you deal with the death of a loved one, know it is necessary to deal with it.

journaling

Grieving the loss of a loved one is required, for someone to “move on” with their life. No, I am not suggesting that you should forget all your precious memories to move on from missing your loved one, I am simply suggesting that you must learn a new normal living without them.

I think this is the hardest part. Accepting a new normal is hard, for me anyways. I, like many I am sure, really despise change in general. Two years after the death of my treasured step-father, I still find myself tearing up when I hear any AC DC song. Old school rock and roll was his thing, he would listen to it in his truck, on the house speakers, etc. Honestly, I think he would listen to it anywhere he could blast it.

grief one

Grieving is essential for one’s mental health to stay upright. It may take you a while to realize what you are going through, and how to cope with it. However, once you get to this point, you will be in a better mental state.

Ending Mental Health Stigmas

Uncategorized

There is no doubt that there are stigmas related to mental illness. Not only are these stigmas effecting people who suffer from mental illnesses, they are effecting the way others view mental illness.

Often, people joke about being “crazy”, but when 1 in 5 people are suffering from a mental illness, this is no joking matter.

Until everyone decides to stop the stigmas surrounding mental illnesses, there will always being certain stigmas related to the topic.

Though you may not know it, there are multiple ways you can help end stigmas related to mental illness. If you are suffering, seek help. You never know who is watching, be a positive influence on whomever is watching you. Show them that it is okay to seek help.

Simple things like speaking out against stigmas can also help end these stigmas. By bringing knowledge to the topic, people will be less likely to speak negatively on it.

Lastly, join a support group if you are trying to find ways to beat the stigmas related to mental illnesses. Joining a group, can introduce you to others, who too are suffering. By connecting with others who are suffering, you will not only have someone who can relate to your issues, but you will have someone who can give you ideas on how to cope.

Keep on, keeping on.

4 Unnoticed Symptoms of Mental Illness

Uncategorized

There are many aspects of mental illness, though we like to focus on the “positive” factors of mental illness sometimes, there are outcomes that negatively effect everyone who suffers from a mental illness. There are common symptoms, but this post will focus on symptoms one may not automatically think of when thinking about mental illness.

First, people who suffer from a mental illness tend to be very emotional. They lash out in anger and they tend to cry a lot. To someone who isn’t suffering it may seem like they are crying over nothing, but to them it is a load of stress and anxiety that has built up and being released when they cry.

sad boy

Secondly, people who suffer from a mental illness tend to be forgetful. From keys, to appointments that have been scheduled for months. People who are suffering from a mental illness forget many things, many individuals write tasks down and depend on lists to remember things to do.

Third, people who suffer from mental illnesses show a significant amount of guilt. From feeling guilty for letting friends and family down, to being guilty for not being enough, the reasons of guilt are endless.

Fourth, many people who suffer from mental illnesses tend to show a decrease in their personal hygiene levels. People who are dealing with anxiety and depression can barely scrape up the motivation to get out of bed, much less getting themselves ready. Many individuals who suffer from mental illnesses tend to not shower for a few days in a row and often women will go without makeup.

If you or someone you know is showing any of these symptoms, be sure to offer a helping hand and encourage talking to a professional.

Improving Happiness in Children

Uncategorized

It is known that showing love and affection positively helps children. In fact parenting styles, shape children for life. Below is an excerpt from a post on parent.com, on How a Parent’s Affection Shapes a Child’s Happiness for Life.

kids

“How often do you hug your children?

We all live busy, stressful lives and have endless concerns as parents, but it is clear that one of the most important things we need to do is to stop and give our kids a big loving squeeze. Research over the past decade highlights the link between affection in childhood and health and happiness in the future.

According to Child Trends – the leading nonprofit research organization in the United States focused on improving the lives and prospects of children, youth, and their families – science supports the idea that warmth and affection expressed by parents to their children results in life-long positive outcomes for those children.

Higher self-esteem, improved academic performance, better parent-child communication, and fewer psychological and behavior problems have been linked to this type of affection. On the other hand, children who do not have affectionate parents tend to have lower self esteem and to feel more alienated, hostile, aggressive, and anti-social.

There have been a number of recent studies that highlight the relationship between parental affection and children’s happiness and success.”
