Should I, or should I not, go see a therapist?  We often ask ourselves that very question, especially around the holidays!  Here are the top three reasons to see a professional!

Large Changes in Your Life

If you are experiencing a big change in your life like a move, new job or a change in a relationship it could be an indicator that you can use some help transitioning.  A therapist can guide you through proven strategies and help you develop skills to deal with large changes.

Large changes in your life can often be accompanied by a lot of work.  Such as packing up for a move or learning new skills at a new job.  The busy work can distract from the build-up of stress.  Speaking with a therapist can help avoid any additional stress or unhealthy repercussions down the road.

Having Dangerous Thoughts.

Wanting to hurt yourself or others is a warning sign you need help.  There is a difference between thoughts and action, but thinking about acting is a precursor to acting.  Being a danger to yourself or others is clear red flag and getting help is easy.  A quick Google search or locations in your area or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or Crisis Text Line can help.

Self-Medication

If you need an external resource to deal with issues around you it’s a clear sign to seek a therapist.  The skill set they can equip you with will help you avoid self-medicating and work through the stress in a healthy way.

There is no substitute for self-care.  As a clinical social worker and life coach, self-care is perhaps one of the most conveyed tools for my clients as well as myself. Self-care cultivates wellness such that it rejuvenates the mind, body, and soul. If you do not take care of yourself, then all your dreams and aspirations will be fruitless.

Feeling overwhelmed? Tired? Unfocused? Burnt out?

You are not alone.

As entrepreneurs, we are so driven by our passions to build our respective empires that at times we neglect the most important variable to our success…our well-being. Thus, it is imperative that we make a habit to take care of ourselves.

Self-care should become routine. Practice self-care daily.

7 Self-Care Tools for Entrepreneurs

  1. Sleep. Research suggests that adults should sleep an average of 7 hours each night. Establish your sleep routine to
  2. Unplug. Put up your “Do not disturb” sign. Unplug from social media. Unplug from your cell phone. Unplug from technology. Take at least 15 minutes each day to unplug.
  3. Nourish your body. Eating and drinking water will only fuel your physical wellness but it impacts your overall level of functioning. Eat at least 3 meals a day to keep your metabolism going. And drinks lots of water.
  4. Laugh. Laughter is truly good for the soul. Laugh at yourself. Laugh with a friend. Read something funny. Whatever you do, laugh!
  5. Exercise. What has held you back from exercising? Transcend that obstacle today and just do it! Exercise is beneficial for your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Commit to exercising at least 30 minutes for 5 days.
  6. Journal. Need to unleash your frustrations, then journal. There are many benefits to journaling. Research suggests that journaling also increases our gratitude.
  7. Surround yourself with positive, like-minded people. Enjoy the company of others unleashing positive vibes.

It is super easy to ignore your own mental health as a parent or guardian of a child. Especially, when your child is under the age of 5 years old. Having someone who completely depends on you is a great deal of responsibility.

Parents tend to focus solely on their child and forget about themselves.

It is important for parents to maintain their mental health to ensure that they are acting as the best parent possible.

Not only will it help you feel better, but your children will notice that you are happier and healthier if you keep your mental health in top form, and you are showing them the importance of mental health.

There are endless ways to keep your metal health in good standing, but we will only cover a few ideas for parents who do not have a lot of “alone time”.

First, taking a hot bath while listening to relaxing music is a great way to clear your head from anxiety from life. By taking just 30 minutes, you can completely relax yourself. Try putting the kids to bed 15 minutes earlier once a week, so that you can get a little extra YOU time.

 

Second, journaling is a great way to clear your thoughts and maintain a healthy mental health lifestyle. I started journaling while pregnant with my son, and have done so for the last year and a half. It is a way to relax and put my thoughts in clear form. I enjoy journaling because I can go back on past entries and see how far I have come with my mental health journey.

Third, get an overnight sitter at least once a month. Seems like a lot just to maintain mental health, but by getting an overnight sitter for the kids, you will ensure that you get at least one full night’s rest, without having to wake up to change a diaper or soothe a crying child. Getting enough sleep is essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it is also necessary in maintaining mental health.
