5 Warning Signs of Depression

  1. A lack of interest in activities that the person used to be interested in. Typically, people who suffer from depression lose interest in doing things that they once enjoyed doing. This can range as anything from dropping out of social events like clubs and sports teams, to walling themselves off from outsiders with whom they once shared a hobby. This symptom of depression typically goes on to worsen the condition, because it hurts some of the social relationships that depression sufferers previously engaged in.
  2. A noticeable change in eating habits is another big warning sign of depression. While there are obviously a number of reasons why one might change their diet, big shifts in weight gain and/or weight loss typically signify a loss of interest in eating or a lackadaisical attitude towards making food. This symptom, in turn, can negatively impact a depression sufferer’s physical health.
  3. Suddenly noticing an increase in the number of headaches, stomachaches and physical symptoms is another sign of depression. While depression in itself is a mental condition, it is often accompanied by a number of physical discomforts like headaches and stomachaches.
  4. Constant fatigue or an inability to sleep is a big warning sign of depression. This can either come as a slight problem with sleeping enough to feel fully rested, or it can be full-blown insomnia. Waking up too early or constantly waking up during the night are other common signs of depression.
  5. The most serious sign of depression is thoughts of suicide or hurting oneself. Unlike the other symptoms, which on their own can be indicators of a number of conditions, this particular sign almost always signals depression.

4 Tips: Mental Health and the Entrepreneur

Therapy Talk Thursdays

Entrepreneurs are bold and audacious people pursing their passions.  The day to day activities of the entrepreneur are often solo.  Most start-ups are one-person machines.  The contrast between leadership and being alone in the journey can often leave entrepreneurs overly stressed.

StressedEntrepreneur

A start-up is exciting and fills the entrepreneur with purpose and passion.  However, it can quickly lead to depression, leaving many entrepreneurs confused.  Shouldn’t turning your passion into a business fill you with energy and happiness?

The feelings of isolation can be like a slow and steady pain that grows overtime and saps entrepreneurs from the inside out especially when their mental health needs are neglected.

Releasing stress after work with co-workers, a spouse or anyone that can relate is a great way to unwind.  The challenge with many entrepreneurs is that the day-to-day activities aren’t normal.  Most people can’t relate or have no idea what you’re talking about when you try to vent.  It’s difficult to explain and can be even more taxing to have to lay the groundwork to talk about an issue you’re having.

My challenge for all my fellow entrepreneurs is to take control of your mental health. Your success depends on it.

4 Mental Wellness Tips for the Entrepreneur

  1. Engage in Self-Care.
  2. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People.
  3. Complete a personal and business inventory.
  4. Seek professional help.

Take 10 For Mental Wellness

Therapy Talk Thursdays

There are countless ways mental illness can affect one’s life. Whether it is a person withdrawing from society or someone self-harming, effects of mental illness are real. There are many ways to help yourself if you suffer from a mental illness. But are there ways to help yourself without medication and if your counselor or therapist cannot see you on the spot?

If you guessed yes, you are 100% correct.

Many people find that just taking a walk outside in the fresh air helps or taking a hot bubble bath at night are instant stress relievers. While others say, their relief comes after coloring in an adult coloring book. Whatever you choose, it is helpful for your mental wellbeing to take a break, even if it is just a 10 minute one!

Most of the time we get so caught up in our significant others, kids, and friend’s lives that we don’t remember to properly care for ourselves (as a mom I am guilty as charged). By taking ten minutes out of the day to relax and think about only yourself will help relieve stress. It will help you refocus and get back on tract if you were having a hard time staying on track. It is important to find something that can relax you without distracting you from the rest of the day!

I promise if you allow yourself to take 10 minutes to relax daily, you will see improvements in your mental health.

Hang in there, it gets better!

Celebrate

Anniversary Celebration

Success is not measured by the position one has reached in life, rather by the obstacles one overcomes while trying to succeed.-Booker T. Washington

Happy August 25! I remember the day as if it were yesterday. On February 25, 2013, my dreams and vision of owning a private practice became reality with the opening of Destination Greatness in Durham, NC. Today, I celebrate 4.5 years as a business owner. Destination Greatness now provides psychotherapy, clinical supervision, psychoeducation, and workshops in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

I give the Most High praise for the storms that have elevated me to greater.

This journey has been filled with many adversities and challenges. From the 6-10 hour day trips for meetings with clients to past business dealings with others not committed to my mission, vision, and principles, I am still standing. I give the Most High praise for the storms that have elevated me to greater.

The sacrifices of time, energy, money, and relationships can add up. However, I remind myself that obedience is greater than sacrifice. I will forever remain committed, obedient, and faithful to the revelations of the Most High.

To all whom have taken this journey with me, Thank You! As I approach the 5th year Anniversary on February 25, I am more focused than ever on the next level of Greatness.

Please save the date of February 25 to join me in Atlanta, GA for a celebration of greatness. Details for sponsors, speakers, and guests will be released in the coming months.

With Gratitude,
